Bagged rapid set, often sold as post mix, uses accelerating additives so it stiffens within roughly 10 to 30 minutes of being wetted. Many brands allow a dry pour, where you place the dry mix into the hole around the post and add water afterwards, which suits post work particularly well. The plant-batched version is a different product for a different problem, and it is what a builder usually means by the term. The driver is programme, not convenience.

A rapid set or high early strength mix is produced by adjusting the mix design and adding accelerating admixtures so the concrete reaches a usable strength far sooner than a standard mix. Instead of waiting seven days for enough strength to carry traffic, a high early mix might get there in one to three days, which matters for road repairs, industrial floors, staged construction, or a post-tensioned slab that needs to be stressed on schedule. It is worth it for fence posts, clothes lines, letterboxes, sign posts and similar jobs where you want to release the post and move on rather than propping it overnight. It is worth it where you cannot leave a site secured, such as a footpath repair on a public path or a hole in a driveway a car needs to cross. And at plant scale it is worth it where the programme genuinely depends on early strength, such as stressing a slab or reopening an access road. For a driveway, shed floor, path or any normal residential slab, standard concrete is the right choice and speeding it up buys nothing, since you will still be waiting the same 28 days before you seal it.

When Not to Use Rapid Set

There are jobs where reaching for rapid set makes things worse, and the short working time is usually why. It removes your margin for error.

Avoid it for anything large, because you cannot place, level and finish a slab of any size before it goes off, and a partly set pour cannot be rescued. Avoid it where finishing quality matters, since decorative work such as exposed aggregate needs a workable window for the retarder and wash-off process. Avoid bagged post mix entirely for structural work. And avoid rapid set on a hot day for anything but the smallest job, because the working time shortens further just when you need it most.
