From groundwork to sealing

The Four Stages of a Good Pour

Most cracked or flaking concrete can be traced back to a skipped step, not a bad batch. Here’s what needs to happen, and where Broadmix fits in.

Before the truck is booked

Get the Steel Checked, Then Order the Concrete

In Victoria, the building surveyor must be notified before footings are placed and before a reinforced concrete slab is poured on a job that needs a building permit. That inspection checks the steel: mesh and bar at the right height on chairs, enough cover to the edges, laps tied and plumbing penetrations in place. If the inspector asks for changes, your pour date moves.

So book the inspection first and the concrete second. With the steel approved and a crew lined up, ring us with the slab size and grade. If you’re unsure what your plans call for, send them over and we’ll size the mix and volume from the drawings.

The First 28 Days After Your Pour

Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks, and those early days decide how it wears. Shepparton summers are hot and dry, which pulls moisture out of a fresh slab fast. Keep the surface damp with a light spray or cover it with plastic for the first week, and avoid pouring in the heat of the afternoon. Control joints should be cut early, usually within a day, so any shrinkage cracks follow the joint instead of wandering across the slab.

As a rough guide, foot traffic is fine after 24 to 48 hours, cars after about a week, and heavy machinery once the slab is close to full strength at 28 days. Your concreter has the final say for your job. Sealing comes last. Most sealers go on once the concrete has cured properly, so check the product instructions or ask us which Broadmix sealer suits your finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally after about seven days for a car, and longer for trucks or heavy machinery. Concrete reaches its design strength at around 28 days, so treat it gently until then.

It needs compacted crushed rock or gravel underneath, deep enough to hold water while it soaks away. On clay, the base usually has to be deeper or have a drain outlet.

Concrete shrinks slightly as it dries, which can cause fine cracks. Control joints give that movement a planned place to go, so cracks form neatly along the joint instead of across the surface.

Most sealers are applied once the slab has cured, but timing varies by product and finish. Follow the instructions on the sealer, or call us and we’ll recommend one that suits your concrete.
